Battery Groups Explained JIS, DIN, BCI — understanding the group systems

Key Concepts

CCA (Cold Cranking Amps)

The current a battery can deliver at -18degC (0degF) for 30 seconds while maintaining voltage above 7.2V. Higher CCA = better cold-weather starting.

Ah (Ampere-Hour / C20)

The battery's energy storage capacity. C20 means discharged over 20 hours. A 65Ah battery can deliver 3.25A for 20 hours.

RC (Reserve Capacity)

Minutes a battery can deliver 25A at 27degC before dropping below 10.5V. Important for vehicles with heavy electrical loads.

Battery Types

Type Technology Best For
SLI Standard flooded Conventional vehicles
AGM Absorbent Glass Mat Start-stop, premium vehicles
EFB Enhanced Flooded Entry start-stop
